National architects convention from today

: A four-day national architect's convention – ARCH FEST 2010 – is being organised here from Thursday by Madurai Archi Society, a trust of Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Madurai chapter, and the Council of Architecture, the national regulatory body for architects and architectural education.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, event convener and secretary of IIA Tamil Nadu Chapter N. Ramalingam said that the event theme was ‘tradition and architecture,' which was the prime reason for zeroing in on Madurai as the venue.

Around 600 delegates from across the country were expected to take part.

This is the first time that such an event was being hosted in Madurai, he added.

Vijay Krishna Sohoni, president of the Council of Architecture, is the chief guest along with Raj Rewal, one of India's renowned architects in the international stage who has been honoured by the Government of France, he said. A visit to a quarry at Melur, belonging to the event sponsor P.R.P. Exports, has been organised on day two to provide exposure to state-of-the-art technologies in mining.

A stone gallery expo had also been organised at the site, he said.

In order to provide an exposure to Tamil culture and heritage, the delegates would be taken to the Kadambavanam, an ethnic resort that focuses on promoting Tamil heritage.

A tour to the Chettinad belt at Karaikudi and Rameswaram has been scheduled on the last date. A building material expo - Arch Fest 2010 - featuring the latest developments in the sector is also being held. The event is being organised at Lakshmi Sundaram Hall.
