Musical instruments given to artistes

THENI: Traditional musical instruments was given to poor folk artistes at an estimated cost of Rs.52,400 and best artistes were honoured with awards and mementoes at a function held here on Tuesday.

Handing over the instruments and awards, Collector P. Muthuveeran said that 410 folk artistes became members of artistes' welfare association. A sum of Rs.2,000, a certificate and a citation were given to each artiste.

The awardees for 2007-08: M. Abinaya (Bharathanatyam), S. Anandbabu (Art), S.P. Nagarajan (Drama Artiste), S.K. Balu (Raja Rani Attam) and A. Sellasamy (Thevarattam). Awardees for 2008-09 are: V. Hemalatha (Bharathanatyam), M. Selvaraj (Thavil), M. Kavikaruppaiah (Folk Songs), M. Selvaraj (Nagaswaram), M. Sellaiah (Drama Artiste). For the year 2009-10, the awardees are: V. Saravanan (Thevarattam), R. Nacharammal (Bharathanatyam), V. Latha (musical dance) P. Karnan (Folk Songs) and P. Annavi Thever (Silambattam).
