Merchants’ plea to permit transport of sugar in 50 kg bags

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has appealed to the Union Ministry of Agriculture to permit transportation of sugar in 50-kg bags within the country.

In a memorandum presented to Union Minister Sharad Pawar, association president S.P. Jeyapragasam said that at present, the sugar was being transported within the country only in 100 kg bags. Transportation of sugar in 50 kg bags would not only make loading and unloading easier but would also help to stabilise the selling price.

Import duty

In a separate memorandum to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, the association sought the withdrawal of “high rate of import duty” being levied on ‘asafoetida,’ a spice used in vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Mr. Jeyapragasam said that asafoetida attracted import duty of 36.3 per cent, which was on a higher side.
