"It will cause heavy pollution in the Cauvery"

TIRUCHI: Social activist Medha Patkar has come out in support of a section of city residents who are opposed to the establishment of an integrated bus stand at Devadhanam near the river Cauvery.

Devadhanam is one of the five sites being considered for establishing an integrated bus stand in the city. Ms. Patkar visited the site on Friday and heard the views of a few local residents on the issue. Later speaking to reporters, she opposed the establishment of the bus stand. For, it could cause heavy pollution in the Cauvery, as the bus stand would attract thousands of people every day. Protecting the water resources was vital, she said.

Earlier, Ms. Patkar paid floral tributes to the Cauvery during a public reception hosted by welfare organisations in the city. Social activist N.L. Raman presided over the reception hosted in honour of the Narmada Bachao Andolan leader.
