Mazdoor union against privatisation

MADURAI: The Southern Railway Mazdoor Union will oppose any attempt to privatise different sectors of railways through "back door" measures, according to its general secretary, N. Kanniah.

Briefing newspersons here recently , Mr. Kanniah said that through the entities such as Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited and Railtel Corporation of India Limited, Indian Railways was being privatised indirectly.

The move to hand over construction, operation and maintenance, of a Rs.30,000-crore express freight corridor on eastern and western parts of the country to multinational companies would weaken the railways, he said.

These moves, besides resulting in fragmentation of railways, would also place additional burden on the public, he said.

Mr. Kanniah called for holding union elections through secret ballot, failing which the SRMU "might resort to direct action."

The Railway Board was delaying the elections despite a directive of the Supreme Court in this regard.
