Man held with fake notes

CHENNAI: Mohammed Aniruddin (22) from Jharkhand, who was in possession of counterfeit currency notes of Rs.500 denomination, was arrested by the Periamet police here on Tuesday.

According to police sources, the accused, who arrived by train at the Central railway station on Friday night, went to a TASMAC outlet. The shop supervisor who examined a new crispy note Aniruddin gave him, sensed foul play and alerted the patrol police.

Within minutes, Aniruddin was taken into custody. Police found Rs.95,000 in his travel bag, all of Rs.500 denomination. When investigators showed the currency notes in a nationalised bank for verification, the bank officials said they were genuine. However, a clarification made with the Reserve Bank of India revealed that it was counterfeit currency.

The accused was produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody.
