Make use of agricultural laboratories: Minister

TIRUCHI: Transport Minister K.N.Nehru appealed to the farmers to make use of the agricultural laboratories set up in Tiruchi district and get proper advice for increasing the yield of all agricultural crops.

Inaugurating the 11th agricultural laboratory in Tiruchi district set up by the Agricultural department at Natarjapuram in Tiruverambur block on Sunday, the Minister said that the laboratory would provide all information to the farmers, including the quality of the soil, the quantity of pesticides and fertilisers that should be applied for various crops.

Mr Nehru, who distributed loans to the tune of Rs.31 lakh to 38 women self help groups and medium term loan of Rs.13 lakh to 91 farmers at the function, advised the farmers to take up paddy cultivation under system of rice intensification (SRI) method to get good yield with less cost of production.

He pointed out that farmers could achieve yield of 80 bags of paddy (60 kg per bag) per acre under the SRI method of cultivation and said that a farmer at Musiri had achieved the maximum yield of 100 bags of paddy under SRI method.

The Minister appealed to the women SHGs to make use of the financial assistance for viable income-generating units and earn more income. He said that he would consider issue of mini bus permit to the women SHGs.
