Parvathi Omanakuttan lends her popularity to ‘Hridayamalar’ programme

CHENNAI: Parvathi Omanakuttan, first runner-up of Miss World 2008, lent her popularity to the ‘Hridayamalar’ programme of Madras Medical Mission here, in an attempt to raise funds for the charity project.

Under the project, 25 girl children with cardiac ailments will be operated upon free of cost.

The programme was launched to mark the National Girl Child Day on Saturday at the hospital.

Launching ‘Hridayamalar,’ Ms. Omanakuttan said that despite the steady economic growth, gender bias was still deep rooted and rampant in many parts of the country.

The skewed sex ratio showed the existence of certain degree of discrimination. She lauded the medical fraternity for its services towards the downtrodden and assured all help from her side for the cause.

Donors honoured

The donors of Madras Medical Mission were honoured at the function, which was organised to commemorate the completion of 10,000 paediatric cardiac surgeries at the hospital.

Speaking at the event, R.Suresh Kumar, Head of the Paediatric Cardiology Department observed that advancements in technology have brought down the infant and surgical mortality rates.

The Director-Cardiology, Mullsari Ajit, detailed the projects undertaken by the hospital. “Around 245 children were operated upon under ‘Hridaya Poorvam Sakhyam’ and 142 of them were girls. The focus is to benefit girl children, who are less accessible to health services,” he said.

The vice-president of the hospital E.J. Thomas presided over the event.

Children from several countries, including Kenya, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Fiji, who underwent cardiac surgeries, interacted with Ms. Omanakuttan.
