CHENNAI: Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) on Friday replaced 75 buses and recruited 90 new fleet employees at a function held in the city.
Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin handed over appointment letters to 474 persons in various State Transport Corporations, including 90 in the MTC. The appointment was made on compassionate grounds. The recruitment of the kin of employees who died in harness was happening after a gap of 10 years, Mr. Stalin said.
Transport Minister K. N. Nehru recalled that he had made a commitment in the Assembly in April this year that the State Government would resume appointments on compassionate grounds. Out of the 90 persons for the MTC, 80 have been designated as conductors and 10 others drivers.
Mr.Stalin also flagged off 75 new vehicles for the MTC, including 25 new vestibule buses, 3 low-floor buses and 47 Bharat Stage III buses. These vehicles will replace the old vehicles in the MTC fleet.
