MADURAI: K. Muthuchelian, Head and Chairperson, School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources and Director, Centre for Biodiversity and Forest Studies, MKU, has been nominated as a member in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) which is headquartered in Switzerland.

He represents South Asia in the IUCN-Commission on Ecosystems Management for three year period 2009-12, according to a press release here on Monday.

The mission of IUCN, which has official status at the United Nations General Assembly, is to influence, encourage and assist societies all over the world to conserve the diversity of nature and ensure that the use of natural resources is equitable/ecologically sustainable.

An official communication dated August 21 from Piet Wit, Chairperson, IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management, Switzerland, said that the “membership of Dr. Muthuchelian has been renewed until the next World Conservation Congress which will be held in 2012.”
