MADURAI: Members of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a demonstration in support of the Sri Lankan Tamils here on Wednesday.

The agitators, who assembled near Head Post Office at Scott Road, shouted slogans against the Centre and State governments for neglecting the Tamils. The Sri Lankan Army allegedly killed innocent Tamils under the guise of war against terrorists. The members demanded the resignation of the State government immediately. MDMK urban district secretary M. Boominathan, office-bearers M. D. Chinnasellam, S. Mahaboob John participated.

Lawyers stir

A section of lawyers staged demonstration in front of the High Court Bench condemning the killings in Sri Lanka. According to police, the members shouted slogans and some allegedly burnt a portrait of All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi. The advocates have planned to form a human chain on Thursday and stage a demonstration before BSNL office in Tallakulam on Friday boycotting court proceedings.
