SALEM: The State Lorry Owners' Federation - Tamil Nadu has decided to support the nation-wide strike called by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) protesting against the increase in the third party insurance premium for commercial vehicles.

In a press release, federation president P. Sengodan called upon owners of lorries, tankers, mini-lorries, vans and goods auto rickshaws to keep their vehicles off the road indefinitely from January 20. However, the transport of essential goods, including drinking water, milk and medicines would continue, he said.

Insurance companies had increased the premium by 150 per cent, which would affect owners of all vehicles. The federation had condemned the increase in the premium. The lorry owners were already facing a lot of problems in getting third party insurance for their vehicles. It had already appealed to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority and Central Government to take steps sort out the problems, he said.
