Life sentence suspended

MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here has suspended a life sentence imposed on one of the six convicts involved in a 14-year-old double murder case registered by the Vadipatti police station near here.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice K.N. Basha and Justice P.P.S. Janarthana Raja, granted bail to the prime accused Mayee alias Mayandi on condition that he should report before the Judicial Magistrate-II here once a month.

The Judges agreed with the appellant’s counsel A. Mohamed Yusuff that the murders had taken place because the convicts refused to part with rowdy ‘mamool’ (money paid periodically) demanded by the deceased.

Hence, it was the deceased and not the convicts who were the aggressors.

Further, the prosecution had also failed to explain the whereabouts of a statement supposedly given by one of the eye-witnesses at the place of the occurrence, the Bench said.
