CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, AIADMK general secretary Jayalaltihaa and leaders of political parties on Sunday conveyed Ugadi greetings to people.

“May the New Year usher in peace and prosperity and promote unity and harmony among the people and pave way for the growth and development of the nation,” the Governor said in a message.

The Chief Minister used the occasion to send across the message that Tamils were broadminded and generous and people from other States should emulate them.

“Tamils are very friendly and treat everyone with great respect. Capital Chennai bears a testimony to this. So many people from other States have settled in Chennai and flourished in trade and commerce. They have wealth and lead a comfortable life. Tamils never discriminated them. Instead they have showered love and affection,” he said.

Ms. Jayalalithaa also shared a common point with the Chief Minister. Stating that Telugus and the Kannadigas have coexisted with the Tamils for centuries and retain their culture and heritage, she said such unity should flourish in other States also.

MDMK leader and actor Vijaykanth said selfish forces were trying to drive a wedge between people and urged them to identify and sideline such forces.
