“If Karunanidhi makes an appeal, there is a possibility that LTTE may listen”

“The killing of innocent Tamils will stop, if the outfit lays down arms and surrenders”

“Even if I go to Sri Lanka, the LTTE will not pay heed to anything I say”

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Wednesday said that a ceasefire in Sri Lanka could be achieved only with the laying down of arms and surrender by the LTTE.

“Today, the need of the hour is a ceasefire. How can this be brought about? This can be achieved only with the LTTE laying down arms and surrendering,” she told reporters at the party headquarters. Ms. Jayalalithaa thanked Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa for inviting her to Sri Lanka, but felt that no useful purpose would be served by her visit to the country at this juncture as “most certainly,” the LTTE would not listen to her. “I have always been a staunch opponent of the LTTE. Therefore, even if I go to Sri Lanka the LTTE will not pay heed to anything I say,” she said.

On the other hand it would be useful if Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi made a visit.

“If he makes an appeal or offer an advice there is a possibility that the LTTE may listen to him,” she added.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said that everyone agreed that killing of innocent Tamils had to be avoided, and the only way that could be ensured was by the LTTE’s surrender. “So it is advisable and desirable for the Chief Minister to make a visit to Sri Lanka.”

LTTE cannot be defeated: Vaiko

Earlier, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, an ally of Ms. Jayalalithaa, while leading a demonstration said that the LTTE could not be defeated in the war. “We will continue to articulate our support for the Sri Lankan Tamils even if we have to lay down our lives for the purpose. We will not rest even if our political life is destroyed.”

Accusing the Congress-led UPA government of having a sinister hidden agenda on the Sri Lankan issue, he said the Indian government was hand-in-glove with the Sri Lankan government.

He said that the BJP government always protected the interests of the Tamils. Former Prime Minister Vajpayee had refused to supply arms to Sri Lanka.
