Krishnasswamy disowns Iftar party

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy has disowned the Iftar party organised by a section of the party leaders, in the name of the TNCC, here on Friday.

Mr. Krishnasswamy told The Hindu that he was neither consulted nor informed about the function. When J. M. Haroon, party MP, informed him that he was organising an Iftar party, he thought it was being organised in his personal capacity. Only on seeing the invitation did he come to know that Mr. Haroon was conducting it on behalf of the TNCC.

Meanwhile, he had written to the Chief Minister, requesting him to participate in the Iftar party being organised by the TNCC, Mr. Krishnasswamy said. Normal procedures followed by the Congress were flouted while hosting this year’s party. In functions organised by the TNCC, the TNCC president should preside. But Friday’s function was chaired by Union Minister G. K. Vasan. When contacted, Mr. Haroon said he had met Mr. Krishnasswamy and invited him for the function. Unfortunately, the TNCC president’s name was printed in small font in the invitation. He had apologised to Mr. Krishnasswamy for it. To make amends, he issued advertisements in newspapers, giving prominence to the TNCC president.
