Kottar Bishop passes away

Nagercoil: Bishop Leon Augustine Tharmaraj (65) of Kottar Diocese passed away, owing to prolonged illness in the early hours of Tuesday.

The Bishop was admitted to the Regional Cancer Centre on January 12. His body will be kept in the Bishop house on Wednesday for the public to pay respect to him. A holy mass with a special prayer will be conducted at Kovalam church on Wednesday.

The Kottar Diocese has also decided to take out a procession before his body would be laid to rest on the premises of St. Xavier's Church in Kottar on Thursday.

The representatives of various political parties, including the Tourism Minister, N. Suresh Rajan, the member of Backward Class, Era Bernard, and others paid homage to him.

Leon A. Tharmaraj was ordained as the assistant priest of Siluvaipuram in 1965, assistant priest of Kottar in 1966, assistant priest of Sarel in 1969, parish priest of Rajakkamangalam in 1970, parish priest of Thundathuviai in 1976, rector of St. Aloysius seminary in Nagercoil in 1978 and finally elected as Bishop of Kottar in 1988.

Leon A. Tharmaraj was the fourth Bishop of this Diocese.
