Kanyakumari gets first woman MP

Nagercoil: J. Helen Davidson of Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam won the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha constituency by defeating her nearest rival Pon. Radhakrishnan of Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 65,644 votes.

The DMK has fielded the first woman candidate in this constituency, considered a Congress bastion. Mr. Helen got 3,19,968 votes while Mr. Radhakrishnan polled 2,54,324 votes and the sitting member A. V. Bellarmine of Communist Party of India (Marxist) got only 85,572.

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazagam candidate S. Austin, who was popular in the coastal villages and considered to be a champion of the poor and downtrodden, could get only 68,457 votes.

The total electorate in the constituency is 11,73,308 of which 5,78,110 are women. As many as 22 candidates were in the fray.

This is for the first time that a woman is elected to the Lok Sabha from Kanyakumari.
