‘The Battle of Buffet’ is being organised on October 1 in Chennai

CHENNAI: The best hotels in the city will showcase their culinary talent and skills at ‘The Battle of the Buffet’ on October 1 at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, to raise funds for non-governmental organisations in Chennai.

“The funds raised could help educate a child, provide shelter to the elderly, subsidise medical costs for a poor patient, rehabilitate a mentally ill homeless woman and reach out to several such underprivileged people,” said M. Mahadevan, Director, Oriental Cuisines and the event organiser.

He was speaking at a meeting with NGOs here on Friday about the proposed event.

The event is part of the ‘Joy of Giving Week,’ which aims to bring people together to get involved with a cause of their choice. “We expect more than one crore people from various parts of the country to participate and get engaged in acts of giving during the period between September 27 and October 3,” he added.

It will be a concerted effort across companies, celebrities, business heads, NGOs, schools, colleges and the public to create a movement of giving, said Mr.Mahadevan.

The event is an opportunity for NGOs to reach out to the larger public and tell them about their work.

Each NGO would bring in supporters who would be able to make a donation of a minimum of Rs.5,000 to it. This will entitle them to a donor pass to participate in the event. Those NGOs that bring in a celebrity to step up the overall draw of the event will also have access to undesignated funds raised from the event.

Celebrities supporting the NGOs would provide some form of entertainment. NGOs would showcase their work through stalls, said Mr. Mahadevan.
