SALEM: Salem Corporation removed more than 50 unauthorised hoardings installed at various parts of the city on Friday.

Commercial establishments had put up a large number of hoardings in several areas without obtaining proper permission from the district administration and the civic body.

Some of the hoardings were erected on lands belonging to the Corporation and State Highways department.

Following repeated representations from the public, the civic body launched a drive to remove unauthorised hoardings a few months ago.

As a part of the drive, civic workers on Friday removed such hoardings in Hasthampatti, Mulluvadi Railway level crossing, Cherry Road, Periyar Flyover, Bretts Road and a few other parts in the city. They also removed banners and cut-outs of various political parties.

Officials said that the revenue loss to the Corporation and district administration due to the erection of unauthorised hoardings was running into lakhs of rupees.

Meanwhile, residents said that the proliferation of hoardings was mainly due to lack of a comprehensive mechanism for monitoring the installation of hoardings.

They urged the Corporation to initiate sustained efforts to remove all hoardings that were causing immense inconvenience to pedestrians and distracting vehicle drivers.
