Heritage awareness planned

MADURAI: With the objective of creating awareness among the youth of the need to preserve the unique and ancient heritage of the Temple City, a programme will be conducted here on September 27, World Tourism Day.

Travel Club and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) have joined hands for this purpose. The programme is scheduled to be conducted at Keelakuyilkudi village, near here.

“We plan to bring 100 to 200 students, both from schools and colleges, and show them the Jain monuments at the nearby hillock, which are part of the Jain Circuit. The significance of the monuments will be explained to the students by two competent processionals,” G. Vasudevan, past president of the Travel Club, said. Some of the monuments have been defaced or have graffiti all over them.

The Tourism Department will organise cultural programmes such as folk dances on September 27.
