Heavy vehicle drivers to undergo refresher training

It will be conducted based on the syllabus drawn up by the Institute of Road Transport

SALEM: The State Government has made it mandatory for all heavy vehicle drivers to undergo the one-day skill upgradation and refresher training for renewal/endorsement of their driving licences.

A release said that the Government was convinced that apart from the deterrent enforcement measures, there had to be definite improvement in the quality of drivers using the roads. Proper and adequate training to the drivers on all related aspects including road safety needs would be given due attention on a continuous basis.

Accordingly, the government issued an order making the training mandatory for all the heavy vehicle drivers. The training would be conducted based on the syllabus drawn up by the Institute of Road Transport.

The certificate should be produced within a period of six months prior to the date of application for endorsement/renewal of driving licence. Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways invited proposals from non-governmental organisations for providing financial assistance for giving training to the heavy vehicle drivers in unorganised sector. A copy of the guidelines for grant of assistance, application and enclosures could be obtained from the Collector/regional transport offices in the districts. The filled in applications should be sent along with the certificate and recommendations of the Collector. The application received after June 10 would become ineligible for recommendation from the Transport Commissioner’s office. More information can be had from >www.tn.gov.in/sta.
