Holiday declared for education institutions

Udhagamandalam: Torrential rain on Saturday night triggered a number of major and minor landslips in the Nilgiris. The downpour continued on Sunday also.

The district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday. Railway sources told The Hindu that train services between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam were cancelled on Sunday.

Rainfall

Ketti recorded a rainfall of 210 mm, Coonoor 141 mm, Upper Bhavani 135, Kundah 120, Kotagiri 109, Emerald 107, Kodanad 106, Udhagamandalam 100, Glenmorgan 98, Avalanchi 93, Kinnakorai 90, Geddhai 74 and Burliar 70.

A house at Gandhinagar on the Ooty-Lovedale road was damaged in the landslip on Sunday morning.

Even as rescue operations were in progress another landslip occurred a few metres away injuring Saravanan (35) and Thirumoorthy (24) of Lovedale. They were admitted to a hospital.

Officials said that 19 houses in various parts of the district were partly damaged. Storm water entered many houses at MGR Nagar and TDK Pillay road in Coonoor and Old Ooty here. Flood affected families were removed to safe places and basic requirements provided.

Road block

Electric posts were damaged at Jayanthi Nagar, near Wellington.

Trees fell across the road at a number of places, including Aruvankadu and Westbrooke, near Kotagiri. Power supply was disrupted in some places including Coonoor.

Residents of Coonoor said that though the heavy rain had affected normal life, it has helped ease the water supply situation.

Owing to the inclement weather, roads in Udhagamandalam, Coonoor and Kotagiri wore a deserted look. Majority of the tourists preferred to stay indoors.

Control room

A control room has started functioning at the Collectorate, officials said.

The Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, A. Raja, the Khadi Board Minister, K. Ramachandran, and the Nilgiris Collector, Anandrao V. Patil, visited a number of rain affected areas.
