CHENNAI: Students of Wigan and Leigh College celebrated the 60th year of Indian Independence by making a 60-foot greeting card in the city on Saturday. In an atrium of the Spencer’s Plaza, the bright green and saffron of the Indian flag were ‘marbled’ onto a white vinyl sheet on which ‘Freedom 60’ was printed in dark blue letters.
Curious onlookers hung over the banisters and railings from the floors above the atrium as groups of young people floated stretches of the 60-foot long vinyl sheet over a tub of colourful fluid. ‘Marbling’ is a technique in which paint is swirled across the surface of a fluid. The fabric to be painted is then floated on the surface of the fluid, so the paint leaves its patterns on the fabric.
With faces and hands smeared with paint, students of the Wigan and Leigh College India were angling for a direct entry into the Limca Book of Records 2008. Some of their creations for formal, evening and casual wear were also on display.
