Government polytechnic to function soon

A government polytechnic would start functioning at Thiruthuraipoondi from September this year, said M.Chandrasekaran, Tiruvarur district collector, here on Wednesday. After getting the approval from the State government last year, the Central government would provide Rs 7.69 crore for establishing the institution. Five acres of land for the purpose have been identified at Korkai village near Thiruthuraipoondi. Before the construction of buildings at Korkai, the polytechnic would run temporarily at the PWD complex at Thiruthuraipoondi. The Collector inspected the three-storied building at the PWD complex on Wednesday.

He instructed the officials to prepare the building suitably for running the polytechnic. “The polytechnic will function from this building initially for two years. Later, it will be shifted to its own building, which will come up at Korkai village,” the Collector told The Hindu. “Tiruvarur has now got a government polytechnic, a government medical college and a Central university. The polytechnic will mainly cater to the needs of rural students of Thiruthuraipoondi, ” he said . The polytechnic would offer diploma courses in civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and computer science.
