Government college opened at Thiruvennainallur

Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy inaugurated a government arts and science college, and, higher education extension centre of Thiruvalluvar University at Thiruvennainallur near here on Tuesday.

He said that 229 candidates, including 149 girls, had been admitted to the college. Ninety per cent of them were from the surrounding areas.

Seventy per cent of the candidates were first generation literates and 50 per cent belonged to Scheduled Caste, Mr. Ponmudy said.

The college, at present, would function from the government higher secondary school campus. It would have its own buildings by next academic year. The process of identifying a suitable site was on, he said. Mr. Ponmudy said that the Villupuram district was forging ahead in the educational front. As many as 40 middle schools had been upgraded into high schools and 41 high schools into higher secondary schools in the district. In schools, rote learning had been replaced by activity-based learning. The district could now boast of two government engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, and a government medical college.

The Minister called upon students to make best use of the opportunities available.

Collector R. Palanisamy, Vice-Chancellor of Thiruvalluvar University A. Jothimurugan, Registrar Krishnamurthy, Chief Educational Officer P. Kuppusamy and MLA S. Pushparaj were present.
