TAMBARAM: A nine-year-old girl and her five-year-old brother drowned in the Vandalur Lake near Tambaram on Monday evening. Their bodies were found floating on Wednesday morning.

There were tense moments when a group of residents confronted policemen from the Otteri police station when they came to retrieve the bodies, charging them with slackness as a complaint was lodged on Monday evening itself.

Otteri police said Nandakumar, a daily wage earner, was living with his wife Tamilselvi and their two children Rasika and Jeevan on Otteri Extension Tenth Street. Some months ago, Tamilselvi left the family and did not return.

Since then, Nandakumar left his children to the care of his parents-in-law Koteeswaran and Malathi and their daughter Suganya in Otteri, while he moved to Kolapakkam, a few km away.

The sister and brother, studying in a school near their house, were promoted recently to class V and I respectively. On Monday evening, Rasika and Jeeva had gone out to dump a plastic bag containing dust swept from their home. However, they did not return home, making their grandparents and aunt anxious.

At 6 a.m. on Wednesday, a resident of Otteri noticed the bodies of the two children floating in the lake. Personnel from the Otteri police station reached the spot to retrieve the bodies, when they were confronted by a section of angry residents.

Policemen refuted their allegations and said that they had searched all over Otteri and even in places in neighbouring police stations. The bodies were sent to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet for postmortem.
