CHENNAI: A gang that allegedly murdered a sanitary worker was apprehended by the Semmancheri police here on Tuesday.

According to police sources, V. Setu (35) of Tsunami Nagar was found dead with multiple injuries at Ganapathy Nagar on Monday. A special team formed to investigate the case made enquiries and found that Setu had tried to intervene and prevent a scuffle between two groups on Sunday night.

The suspects attacked him with stones. The victim suffered a serious head injury and died on the spot.

A teenaged girl who was present at the scene of crime was also arrested under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information) of the IPC and sent to the Government Home for Women.

According to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Thoraipakkam), K.N. Murali, the accused, T. Suresh (22), P. Vijay Kumar (24), R. Raj (20) and M. Selvan (20), attacked Setu after he threatened to inform the police about their creating nuisance in the area. All the accused were residents of Tsunami Nagar.

“Under the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar), R. Tirugnanam, we have formed a team to collect the details of occupants in Tsunami Nagar. About 5,500 houses were constructed by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board for tsunami victims. It appears that a majority of the allottees are not living there and have rented out the house to others,” Mr. Murali said.

The accused were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody, the sources said.
