SALEM: The four-laning of Salem – Ulundurpet stretch on the National Highways 68, which was stopped a few months ago, resumed recently.

The National Highways Authority of India has started taking a survey on the stretch and the road works are expected to begin in a week’s time. The construction of culverts and minor bridges has also begun.

The stretch is an important road connecting Salem with Chennai and other cities including Kallakurichi.

The authorities started the four-laning of the stretch a few months ago. But it was stopped due to a sub-contractor. After terminating the contract, the authorities divided the work into three parts and awarded new contracts.

Officials said that the work had been resumed recently.

After taking the survey, road works would be carried out.

The work, which covers 136 km on the National Highways 68, is being carried out at a cost of Rs. 940 crore.

The authorities are also carrying out patchwork in a few parts as the road remains in bad shape.

The entire stretch would be four-laned within three years, officials said.
