KANCHEEPURAM: An altercation between two groups over the auctioning of goats at a temple in Tiruporur resulted in the death of former Town Panchayat chairman on Sunday evening.

According to police, trouble broke out at the temple precincts this afternoon between two groups – the first group headed by the present Tiruporur Town Panchayat chairman Devaraj and the second one led by former chairman Munusamy – when the temple authorities conducted auctioning of goats offered by the devotees during the two-day festival held recently. In the melee, Munusamy’s sons sustained injuries and the former chairman came to the police station to lodge a complaint.

The other group that followed Munusamy picked up quarrel with him right in front of the police station and assaulted him at around 5-30 p.m.

Unable to bear the blows, Munusamy swooned and was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
