Flood warning issued in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur districts

Thanjavur: A flood warning has been issued in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts following heavy discharge of water into the Kollidam river.

According to PWD engineers, 86,000 cusecs of water is being discharged into the Kollidam. It is expected to touch 1.3 lakh cusecs by Saturday night or Sunday.

“There will not be any problem as the river is a flood carrier and can take up to three lakh cusecs. PWD engineers are keeping a watch along the banks of the Kollidam,” said Asokan, Executive Engineer of the Cauvery division. Thanjavur Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar said a flood warning had been issued to people residing along the banks of the Kollidam and also alongside the Cauvery and the Vennar.

The Mettur dam continued to receive 1,10,000 cusecs of water. Discharge from the dam was 1.08 lakh cusecs. The water level stood at 122 feet. The storage was 97 tmcft.

“One lakh cusecs was released from the Krishnaraja Sagar and 35,000 cusecs from the Kabini on Saturday evening. The water will be realised at Mettur dam in a couple of days,” PWD engineers said. Residents of Melaramanallur in Thanjavur district said their village was cut off from the rest of the district. “Water is slowly rising and we have put up sand bags to prevent further flow into the village,” said a resident.
