Flood continues

ERODE: Normal life was affected for the fourth day in succession on Saturday in more than ten areas in Erode, Bhavani and Kodumudi due to flood in River Cauvery.

Because of discharge of 98,000 cusecs of water from the Stanley Reservoir into Cauvery River and 20,000 cusecs of water from Lower Bhavani Project Reservoir, there was heavy flood at Karungalpalayam, Asokapuram, Vairapalayam, Periya Agraharam and Bhavani.

People in over 200 thatched huts and tiled houses were removed to safer areas and accommodated in temples, mandapams and schools. Revenue Department officials camping on the river bank provided food packets.

People living in Ammapet, Nerunjipet and Bhavani were asked not to bathe or wash clothes in the Cauvery. Police pickets were posted on the river banks.

Due to heavy rain in catchments, the inflow into the LBP Reservoir has increased to 20,245 cusecs and 20,200 cusecs of water have been released into the Bhavani River.

People on the banks of Bhavani River at Mudukkanthurai, Bhavanisagar, Sathyamangalam, Kodivery, Bangalapudur, Mevani, Kezvani, Appakudal and Bhavani areas were asked to go to safer areas.
