Floating of caste outfit, main reason for law college violence: panel

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The floating of a caste-based outfit at the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College was one of the main reasons for the November 12 violence, says a fact-finding committee of educationists and human rights activists.

The committee, which went into the issues behind the violence that unfolded in front of police personnel, told a press conference on Thursday that the particular outfit had constantly rallied students of one community against those of another.

It urged the government to ban caste-based organisations in colleges and hostels. It was also imperative to end the rampant politicisation of the campus.

The committee, comprising among others A. Marx, P. Sivakumar and K. Santhosam and advocates Rajni, Manoharan, Kesavan and Raghavan, will shortly submit copies of its recommendations to the Chief Minister, the Law Minister and the Governor.

It wanted the government to ensure that the name of the law college, or for that matter any other institution, was not changed.

The committee recommended that an internship programme, similar to the one for MBBS students, be introduced for final-year law students.
