The price of flowers ranges from Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 a kg

Krishnagiri: Farmers in Krishnagiri are overjoyed, as prices of jasmine flowers have tripled in this harvest following an increase in demand at the Bangalore flower auction market. The price of the scented flowers which earlier stood at Rs. 80 to Rs. 100 a kg has now shot up to Rs. 200 to Rs. 300.

On an average more than 30 tonnes of jasmine flowers are transported from Kaveripattinam, Thimmapuram, Paiyur and the ayacut areas of the Krishnagiri Dam to the Bangalore flower auction market and numerous scent industries.

The crop is cultivated in about 1,115 acres in the Kaveripattinam belt, alone which provides a stable income to farmers throughout the year. The peak season for jasmine flowers is April-September.

During May and June the prices had plummeted to Rs. 40 to Rs. 50 a kg following an increase in the yield coupled with poor quality of the flowers. In addition farmers had also to shell out a sum of Rs. 10 a kg for labour and Rs. 3 for transport charges, incurring a heavy loss.

According to sources in the Bangalore flowers auction market though the season is now at its peak the yield has come down considerably due to scanty rainfall. The average yield per acre has reduced by more than 60 per cent. But farmers are enthused, as the prices have increased following a surge in demand.
