Farm labourers court arrest

CUDDALORE: About 150 members of the All India Agricultural Workers’ Union, led by district secretary T.Ravindran, courted arrested at Vadalur near here on Wednesday.

They staged a dharna in front of Indian Overseas Bank demanding increase in wages under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme from Rs. 80 a day to Rs. 150. They also urged the government to provide jobs to beneficiaries for 200 days in a year. Mr Ravindran said that though the Centre had announced insurance cover to those enrolled in the scheme (the premium was to be shared by the Central and State government equally), it was yet to be implemented in Tamil Nadu.
