Factory draws flak from villagers

SIVAKASI: Around 500 residents of Vadapatti near Sivakasi went on a hunger strike on Wednesday protesting against a carton box manufacturing unit that is coming up in the locality.

The protestors, including 150 women, however gave up the fast in the afternoon after the Superintendent of Police, D. Krishnamurthi, gave them assurance of taking up the issue with the Collector.

The agitators, led by the leader of Vadapatti village, Vellaidurai, threatened to stop construction work of the proposed factory on April 4, if no action was taken.

The villagers contended that the factory would affect the ground water table in the vicinity, the police said.
