Encroachments on drainage channel removed

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: Encroachments on a major drainage channel near Chinthamani in the city were removed on Saturday by officials of the Corporation.

The major drain, originally of a width ranging from 12 to 20 feet, had been reduced to six feet due to encroachments on either side. The important drain, which flows into the Kottai Vaical, serves as a storm water drain for the surrounding areas including Venice Street, Chathram Bus Stand and residential colonies around.

A bicycle parking lot and a compound wall put up around a private property, both encroachments, were removed during the drive. The encroachments on the channel had often resulted in rain waters heading up near the Chathram Bus Stand area. The Mayor, Sarubala R. Tondaiman and the Commissioner, T.T. Balsamy, had recently inspected the channel and ordered the removal of the encroachments.

Corporation earthmovers were deployed to removed the unauthorised structures. The Executive Engineer S.Arunachalam supervised the operation, conducted under tight security.
