KARUR: All efforts are being taken to reopen the gate of the railway level crossing at Lalapet, that was closed following the opening of the new Rail over Bridge (RoB) on January 11, according to Karur MP K.C. Palanisamy.

In a statement issued here Mr. Palanisamy has noted that the sentiments of the public residing in and around Lalapet regarding the closure of the gate have been taken into account.

The issue has been taken up with the Railway authorities and the anguish of the locals in closing the gate on a road that served thousands of people in the area have been highlighted well.

The closure of the gate immediately after the opening of the Lalapet RoB has caused immense trouble to the locals here who had to travel for more than 1km just to cross the tracks. Since the area is abounded by farmers in large numbers they were finding it difficult to use their carts. The day after the opening of the RoB trouble erupted. Led by some of the prominent persons who participated in the inaugural of the RoB, the residents from Lalapet and nearby areas staged a rail roko on January 12 to press their claim for reopening of the gate.

In his statement the MP has noted that the gate was on the road that served people in over 40 villages and all of them would find it extremely difficult to make a detour of at least three km for their daily work.

The MP claimed that he had taken up the issue with the Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu who has in turn assured to approach the issue through the State Highways Minister. The MP further noted that he had requested the Highways Minister to do the needful. The Highways Minister has also written to the Minister of State for Railways in that regard.

Every effort was being made to reopen the closed railway gate and the MP claimed that he was hopeful of the Railway authorities doing the needful pretty soon, Mr. Palanisamy has observed in his statement.
