MADURAI: A software that simplifies the administration of academic institutions and also keeps track of students on a daily basis has been developed ‘in-house’ at the Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) here.

Developed by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the software facilitates easy administration and contains various modules that can be accessed by students, teachers and parents.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday, V. Abhaikumar, Principal, said that the computer software was developed under the Free Open Source Software whose source code licence was available for users to modify it according to their requirements. It would simplify the daily administration of institutions opting for it, he said.

The college had titled it as ‘TCENet’ for its own requirements and the intranet portal had received national recognition from a nationwide survey conducted by an IT magazine which included it among the top five IT implementations in the country for the year, he said.

S. Mercy Shalinie, project leader and faculty in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, who explained the features of the software, said that the objective was to simplify the day-to-day activities of the institution — be it with attendance, examinations or students’ grievances.

A group of students and teachers were involved in developing the software and the efforts yielded results, she said.

A student database was being created and new students joining the college this year would be given an identification number to access the software, Dr. Shalinie said.

Parents would be able to monitor their wards’ academic performance and attendance too while students could post their campus grievances, which would be addressed immediately by special action teams formed for the purpose.

Stating that the college was ready to extend help to schools and colleges in making use of this software, Dr. Abhaikumar said that ‘log in once and access everything’ had become possible through this portal.

The latest news, attendance, alumni, placements, feedback, dues, opinion poll, birthday wishes and timetable are among the modules incorporated in this software.
