TIRUCHI: Students in rural areas are exhilarated over the prospect of experiencing practical learning of computer science at the higher secondary level what with each Government school in the district due to receive eight computers and a laptop of latest configurations this year.

The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) has already commenced the process of distributing the computers.

Printers have already arrived and the supply of computers is expected in a week’s time, according to the Chief Educational Officer R. Muthukrishnan. In Tiruchi district, the computers and laptops will be supplied to all the 48 Government Higher Secondary Schools and 13 Adi Dravidar Welfare Higher Secondary Schools.

Good patronage

There is a good patronage for the group with the combination of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science. The subject would also be necessarily taught in the combination of Commerce, Accountancy and Commerce, Mr. Muthukrishnan said, adding that most of the Government higher secondary schools offer Commerce group.

Computer Science teachers who were appointed a few years ago on a contract basis by ELCOT would handle the subject.

Most of them are continuing with their jobs in Government schools, after the completion of contract period.

The full-fledged study of computers at the higher secondary level would stand the students in good stead when they pursue college studies.

While students performing well can rest assured of pursuing BE/B.Tech in Information Technology or Computer Science and Engineering by virtue of counselling, those who opt for Arts and Science colleges could also exercise the luxury of having quite a few options to choose from.
