`They should focus on treating patients from rural areas'

ERODE: Vast strides are being made in the fields of Information Technology and Biotechnology. Technology is growing at a rapid pace. Hence, the doctors should equip themselves and be ready to implement the technological developments in their field. Doctors, especially orthopaedic surgeons, should update their knowledge, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, on Saturday while inaugurating the 40th annual conference of Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association.

The Collector thanked the doctors for their cooperation in implementing the biomedical waste disposal system and helping the district administration to maintain a pollution-free town. He wanted them to take part `Varumun Kaappom' scheme and treat the poor and needy. He also wanted the doctors to devote their attention on treating those from rural areas. He also thanked the Indian Medial Association, Erode and Imayam Trust for starting a Terminally Ill Cancer Patients Home near Erode.

Presiding over the conference, the president of the Association, David V. Rajan, said the orthopaedic doctors should exchange knowledge and provide quality treatment to the patients.

He stressed the importance of quality health care and added that it should be improved by complementing the skills of various surgeons as a group.

Dr. David said that orthopaedic doctors in Government service are doing yeoman service to the poor and needy patients in spite of constraints and complimented them for the effort.

He said 60 to 70 percent of orthopedic work is carried in private sector and so he wanted the doctors to provide good hospital facilities and treatment.

Regarding clinical practice and research, Dr. David said, "Orthopedic surgeons should educate and encourage people to get insured. Patients should also be educated about the perils of native treatment and magic remedies and importance of evidence-based medicine should be emphasised." The orthopaedic surgeons should also go beyond the art of survival to the art of living.

The Municipal Chairman, K. Kumar Murugesh, released the souvenir. The Correspondent, Bharathy Vidya Bhavan, Dr. L.M. Ramakrishnan, released an Ortho Doctors directory. The Organising Secretary of the conference, S. Natesan, welcomed the gathering.
