Distribution of Pongal packages commences

A total of 3,28,357 Pongal bags would be distributed through 685 ration shops in Tiruvarur district, said U.Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister, here on Saturday. He inaugurated the distribution at the ration shop on West Main Street in the town. The total cost of the bags was Rs. 1.40 crore. Each bag, worth Rs. 42.90, contains half a kg of raw rice, half a kg of jaggery, 100 grams of dhal, 10 grams of cashew, five grams of dry fruits and five grams of cardamom.

The Minister inaugurated the distribution of free dhotees and sarees for the BPL people for the Pongal festival. He said 3,11,569 sarees and 3,11,378 dhothies would be distributed.

M.Chandrasekaran, Collector, appealed to the people to celebrate the festival in a grand manner. K.Thennan, Tiruvarur Municipal Chairman, Shankar, Vice-Chairman, and M.Thangavel, District Revenue Officer participated.

Nagapattinam

Free distribution of Pongal package of groceries was inaugurated here by Minister for Dairy Development U.Mathivaanan at Athipuliyur Panchayat of Keezhvelur on Friday.

Over 4,22,822 card holders across the district would be given bags through fair price shops. Over 3,94,279 dhotis and 3,94,282 sarees would be distributed.

Collector C.Munianathan presided over the distribution. V.Rajendran, District Revenue Officer, and Periasamy, Joint registrar for Cooperatives were present.

Karur

Distribution of free Pongal bags to the cardholders through fair price shops was inaugurated by Collector J. Uma Maheswari at Thanthonrimalai, here on Saturday. She said 2,96,657 families would be given the packages. A total of 1,23,024 cardholders in Karur taluk, 61,052 in Aravakurichi taluk, 53,930 in Kulithalai taluk, 30,755 in Krishnarayapuram taluk and 27,896 in Kadavur taluk would get bags, she said. People below the poverty line would be given free sarees and dhotees. An estimated 2.56 lakh sarees and 2.54 lakh dhotees would be disbursed. Pudukottai

A. Suganthi, Collector, inaugurated the distribution of free Pongal bags at a ration shop at Vasantham Nagar, here on Saturday. She said the distribution would continue till January 14 including the holidays.

Besides, token would be issued in advance, specifying the date of issue of dhotees and sarees.

Perambalur

Nearly 1.52 lakh card holders in the district would get Pongal packages, said S.Palanisamy, District Revenue Officer, here on Saturday. After inaugurating the distribution at Siruvachur village, he said free dhotees and sarees were being distributed to the BPL people.



Ariyalur

Collector T.K.Ponnusamy who inaugurated the distribution of Pongal bags at Melapazhur, Reddipalayam, Variangaval and Ponparappi villages on Saturday, said the Pongal packages would be given to 2.09 lakh family card holders through fair price shops.



He said each Pongal bag contained raw rice and jaggery of 500 grams each, 100 grams of green gram dhal, 19 grams of cashew and five grams each of dry grapes and cardamom. Besides, 1.89 lakh free dhotees and 1.89 lakh sarees would be given to the BPL people.
