Dazzling display of lamps at Poompuhar expo

11-day exhibition inaugurated

CHENNAI: An 11-day exhibition of lamps that opened at Poompuhar showroom on Anna Salai on Monday offers visitors a range of choices.

Lamps designed in various parts of the country on a variety of mediums are on display.

Officials said they expect to transact business of around Rs. 15 lakh during the exhibition from the sale of lamps alone.

An official at the showroom said that every year it nets Rs. 60 lakh to Rs. 1 crore from the counter sale of lamps.

Across the State, Poompuhar showrooms of the Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited earn Rs. 3 crore from lamp sales, he said.

At the exhibition, lamps of different designs vie with one another for space. Customers can choose from those made of terracotta and Jodhpur-white metal, besides the typical Tamil Nadu-style brass lamps.

The ‘Festival of Lamps’ exhibition, being held to celebrate the upcoming Karthigai Deepam festival, was inaugurated by musicians Sriram Parasuram and Anuradha Sriram on Monday.

A discount of 10 per cent is being offered during the exhibition of lamps, which is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
