TAMIL NADU

Day of novelties

CHENNAI: They came from the city and its suburbs chattering all the while and stopping only to sip juices from tetrapacks or nibble on biscuits. The 200 street children had a wonderful time at the sports day organised by the Concern India Foundation. They were sporting orange T-shirts and white caps, white socks and canvas shoes.

The event held on Saturday, at the indoor stadium of YMCA in Nandanam, was sponsored by Citibank and began with warm-up sessions during which the 6 to 14-year-olds lined up to try their hand at basketball, throwing darts and tossing bamboo rings over objects. Every time a child had a near miss the volunteers cheered and the other participants followed suit.

Most of the youngsters were trying on shoes and socks for the first time. They tried on their shoes several times trying to get it right. But the charm of their footwear paled before the excitement brought on by participation in the sporting events, and they had no problem running in their new get-up.

A mock kabaddi match was conducted before the major races.

Events such as sack race, vegetable race and balancing the book were held.

The participants included children from Ebineizer Home, Asha Nivas, Kainkarya and Shabnam Resources. This is the fifth year that Concern India Foundation is conducting such an event.
