DRO inquiry ordered into fire accident

Detailed report to be submitted next week

Virudhunagar District Revenue Officer (DRO), B. Ganesan, will conduct an enquiry into the Tuesday's fire accident near Sattur in which one person was killed and seven officials were critically injured.

District Collector, V.K. Shanmugam, on Wednesday ordered the enquiry, the detailed report of which will be submitted next week.

The accident occurred when the team of officials tried to remove huge quantity of fuse meant for crackers.

The DRO will enquire with the Sivakasi Revenue Divisional Officer, K. Kombaiyan, who had led the team of police and revenue officials to raid illegal cracker units. The sequence of event that led to fire would be enquired from others who were present at the scene of accident.

Opinions from experts in the field of explosives, fireworks and Fire and Rescue Services would be sought.

Meanwhile, the condition of the injured, including the Sattur Town Inspector of Police, Abdul Lateef, continued to be critical, official sources said.

VAO dies

The Kanajampatti Village Administrative Officer, Kumarasamy (57) succumbed to injuries on Tuesday night.

The Vembakottai Police have registered a case of negligent handling of explosive substance causing grievous injury and endangering life.

The case was also registered under the provisions of Indian Explosives Act.

The Minister for Adi-Dravida Welfare, A. Tamilarasi, visited the injured at the hospitals.

The ADGP (headquarters) Anoop Jaiswal, holding additional charge of law and order arrived from Chennai and visited the injured at the hospital in Madurai, police said. He also inquired with the relatives of those injured present at the hospital.
