Karunanidhi invokes imagery from Sangam literature

“We know what we can do and what the Centre can do”

CHENNAI: The general council of the DMK will meet before February 15 and take a decision on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi said here on Saturday. Addressing a function organised by the Sanga Tamizh Peravai to honour him for obtaining classical language status for Tamil and for declaring that Tamil New Year would begin from the Tamil month Thai, he said that the meeting would take a decision on how to determine the course of the lives of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Resolution

Invoking imagery from the Sangam literature, the Chief Minster said, “We are like a man without hands and dumb, who is not able to protect the butter from the scorching sun.” He also recalled the resolution adopted in the Assembly asking the Centre to act immediately to stop the war in Sri Lanka. “We know what we can do and what the Centre can do,” he said and requested the Centre not to give room to those who were trying to politicise the issue.

The Chief Minister said though he was attending the function, his mind was occupied by the Sri Lankan Tamils, who were not able to live peacefully in their country and were driven to Tamil Nadu. “How are we going to save them?” he asked.

PWD Minister and Sanga Tamizh Peravai president Durai Murugan, secretary of the organisation S. Jagathratchagan, poet Vairamuthu and DMK MP Kanimozhi spoke.
