Tirupur: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam members staged a demonstration at Udumalpet near here on Monday urging the Kerala Government to drop the proposed move to construct a dam across Pamba river, which feeds water into Amaravathy river in the district.

The DMDK district joint secretary, T. Balasubramaniam, said that the dam, if it comes up, would affect agriculture crops spread over one lakh acres in Tirupur, Erode, Karur and Dindigul districts and industrial units.

“Thus, the project will have a cascading effect on the livelihood of about 80 lakh people, who were dependent on the Amaravathy river system,” he pointed out.

The Kerala Government, according to the agitators, should scrap the project for the greater interests of poor and predominantly agrarian population in Tamil Nadu.
