Court disposes of Mavis Satcom's plea

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has disposed of a petition filed by Mavis Satcom Ltd seeking a direction to the Department of Telecommunication and the Wireless Adviser to the Union Government to permit conversion of the existing single channel per carrier into multi-channel per carrier mode to enable Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited to receive and uplink a News and Current Affairs TV Channel "Jaya Plus" (by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry).

A Bench of Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice Prabha Sridevan said the petitioner's counsel placed on record two letters issued by the Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Department of Telecommunications dated March 9 and 10. In view of the orders by the Union Government by its two letters, the controversy raised in the writ petition did not survive, and the petition was being disposed of.The Bench said that on the petitioner complying with the conditions laid down in the letter dated March 10, the competent authority should grant the operating licence within two weeks.
