MADURAI: Madurai Corporation has proposed two major road traffic improvement projects, including four-laning of the Inner Ring Road, to de-congest vehicular traffic in the city at a cost of over Rs. 600 crore.

Representatives of consultants appointed by the local body made a presentation of their proposals to the councillors and officials here on Wednesday.

The Inner Ring Road from Uthangudi upto Tirumangalam would be four-laned and all bridges and culverts ready for six-laning of road in future. The proposal also envisages to lay a new stretch of road for over six km near the Madurai Airport to enable extension of the runway. Sharp curves on the proposed 29.2 km road would be done away with. Four laning would take care of the estimated volume of traffic on the road till 2023, a representative said.

Another consultant proposed bus rapid transit system (BRTS) on two stretches of road, Dindigul by-pass road between Fatima College and Palanganatham junction; Vaigai River North bank road between Kamarajar Bridge and Ring Road at Viraghanoor. The six-lane system is all about providing dedicated two-way corridor for buses in the centre of the road. Other vehicles would have one-way traffic on either sides along with service lanes on the edges. A fly-over is proposed at the Kalavasal Junction over the six-lane road connecting Arasardi with Theni road.

Along with BRTS on the north bank, the consultant has proposed to provide uninterrupted connectivity between the Kamarajar Bridge upto Ring Road to make them important roads to reduce traffic on the A.V. Bridge and Kal Palam.

All the causeways and Kurivikaran low-level bridge would be converted into high-level bridge with certain modifications for easy connectivity. Besides, the A.V. Bridge and Kal Palam would be widened.

A better connectivity with wide roads would be provided from Sivaganga road to the town through Obulapadithurai bridge, Ismailpuram and Munichalai so that traffic in Goripalayam junction is substantially cut down.

Commissioner D.J. Dhinakkaran said that the projects would be proposed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Mayor G. Thenmozhi, Deputy Mayor P.M. Mannan, Chief Engineer, K. Sakthivel, officials and councillors participated.
