Consumers told to be aware of rights

Tuticorin: With increasing consumerism and opening of economy by way of liberalisation and globalisation, the protection and safeguarding of rights of consumers had become increasingly important, said Collector R. Palaniyandi while presiding on the National Consumer Day on Saturday at Subbiah Vidyalayam Girls Higher Secondary School here.

He said that the meeting was organised to inculcate consumer awareness in the minds of people.

The programme focused on ‘liberation of consumers’ while procuring commodities with proper scrutiny of the key features on the product and other essential things such as expiry date, maximum retail price and labelling to gauge the veracity of the product.

Consumer rights could be spread among the people if consumer clubs were formed at schools to educate students.

The need for a mass campaign to combat growing exploitation of consumers was the focus of the discussion.
